Cape Town is one of the most distinctive destinations on the African continent. It has a wide-variety of cultures, outstanding nature and scenery, exciting nightlife, gorgeous beaches, and welcoming people. This lively city sits surrounded by the natural wonder of Table Mountain National Park and is not far from safari game reserves and the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. It’s safe to say that no matter your interests, Cape Town has something for every traveler.
Nature Enthusiasts
The beauty of Cape Town’s scenery is unparalleled to anywhere else in the world. Even though it’s major city hub, it’s renowned for the incredible mountains, stunning seascapes, and lush forests that surround it. Hiking up Lion’s Head to catch an awe-inspiring sunset or sunrise is always a must! Or, wander around Kirstenbosch Gardens, which is brimming with over two square miles of natural forest and fynbos.
Animal Lovers
Along with an abundance of plant life, there’s also an abundance of animals. Venture out on safari along the Garden Route or at Aquila Game Reserve to seek out the Big Five—lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. You’ll also see giraffes, zebra, cheetahs, and more! And you won’t want to miss a trip to Boulders Beach where you can hang out with penguins as they swim and waddle around.
City Slickers
Vibrant, colorful, and exciting—those are just a few words to describe this iconic city. From energetic nightlife and great music venues to lively markets and fascinating cultural institutions, there’s so many ways to immerse yourself in this dynamic city. Plus, if you happen to be there on the first Thursday of the month, join in on First Thursdays to enjoy free entry at galleries and venues, along with dining discounts.
Thrill Seekers
Some people want to get their blood pumping and Cape Town has thrilling adventures for just that. Go hang gliding off Signal Hill, paragliding over the city, shark cage diving out in the Atlantic Ocean, or quad biking over the Atlantis Dunes. If you’re looking to hang ten on some major waves, head to Muizenberg for some surfing—just beware of the cold water!
Wine Connoisseurs
South Africa is home to some of the world’s best wineries. Just a short drive outside the city are the gorgeous areas of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Here you’ll find a plethora of picturesque vineyards and mountainous landscapes. Take a day or two to visit wineries, try some reds and whites, and relax with breathtaking scenery.
Beach Bums
Those who visit Cape Town in the spring and summer (Nov–Mar) are in for a treat with an array of warm beaches to escape to. The Clifton Beaches offer ideal spots to lay out, get your tan on, and have fun with friends. Camps Bay Beach gets busy, but is right near the best beach-side restaurants and has an impeccable backdrop of the 12 Apostles. For incredible views of Table Mountain and the city, head out to Bloubergstrand and admire them from the Table View beach.
History Buffs
South Africa has a powerful, storied past and Cape Town is home to much of the county’s history. Nelson Mandela is still a part of everyday life and no trip here is complete without a visit to Robben’s Island where he was imprisoned for 27 years. Cape Town also features a myriad of history museums such as the Iziko South African Museum, District Six Museum, and more. Although they have a controversial past with Aparthied, South Africa’s people and communities use it to uplift themselves, and visitors will surely be inspired by the country’s pride, positivity, and resilience.
Serial Instagrammers
When you’re out and about in Cape Town, you won’t be able to put your camera down. From the pastel buildings in Bo Kaap to the vibrant rainbow huts in Muizenberg—there is no shortage of color here. Plus, each beach, mountain, and park has plenty of unique features to be captured on camera. One post on Instagram will not do it justice.
Foodies
This city is one-of-a-kind when it comes to food. Seafood here is always served fresh, baked goods and coffee are simply divine no matter what cafe you dine at, and the markets sell all the best fruits and veggies. Be sure to try bunny chow, a South African staple, and if you want to be adventurous, head to Arnold’s for Ostrich burgers, crocodile, warthog, and more game dishes.
Family/Group Travelers
Cape Town is a place to be shared with friends, family, and loved ones. The spirit of the city certainly inspires togetherness. To go on safari as a family or drink wine with friends in Stellenbosch makes visiting here that much more special. Plus, it’s easy to travel in packs and if you join a tour group, you’ll love having a guide giving you the inside scoop on everything.
Solo Travelers
While Cape Town is great for group travel, it’s also an ideal place to explore on your own and get out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to get around, and with English as a main language you’ll have no trouble communicating and finding your way to extraordinary things. The city also offers many inviting hostels where you’re bound to meet new people and gain travel buddies. It’s the ultimate place to have solo adventures while also making new friends along the way.
