Day 1: Depart USA
Your fascinating sojourn to the Baltic Coast begins as you depart this evening on your overnight flight to Europe.
*Passengers who did not purchase flights will join the tour in Vilnius on Day 2.
Day 2: Arrive Vilnius (Lithuania)
Welcome to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. You are escorted to your hotel located within an easy walk to the old town. All around, you’ll witness the signs of a city and country prospering anew after years in the shadow of the Soviet Union. This evening, savor a welcome dinner at a cozy local restaurant.

Day 3: Vilnius
Boasting some of northern Europe’s most impressive Baroque architecture, central Vilnius skyline is adorned with domes and belfries. On the ground, you’ll discover a maze of winding narrow alleys lined with 18th century buildings with archways leading to cobbled yards. On a guided morning walking tour of Old Vilnius see Cathedral Square and the impressive Gedimino Tower. Later, visit the grounds of Vilnius University with its imposing inner courtyard; view the pristine Presidential Palace and see St. Anna church, a gem of gothic architecture. Afternoon is at your leisure and you may wish to visit the old Jewish Quarter, former home to one of Europe’s largest, most prosperous Jewish communities. You may also relax at one of the many outdoor cafes and admire Vilnius’ thriving cultural diversity.
Day 4: Trakai Excursion
As you travel west of the city today, view the Television Tower, symbol of Lithuania’s fight for independence. Proceed to Trakai, an enchanting medieval style castle, idyllically surrounded by emerald-green lakes. Tour the castle, now a museum, and admire the exhibits displaying treasures from the period when Lithuania ruled a vast area stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Upon returning to Vilnius this afternoon, enjoy leisure time for independent exploration.
Day 5: Vilnius/Rundale/Riga
The pastoral countryside unfolds as you depart for Riga, the capital of neighboring Latvia. En route, visit splendid Rundale Palace, a baroque-style palace filled with opulent rococo furnishings. Continue to your next stop, the Hill of Crosses, a memorable photo opportunity of the thousands of crosses placed on a hill. Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses, declaring a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice. Arrive in Riga later this afternoon and settle in your centrally located hotel. Tonight you are our guest for a special dinner.

Day 6: Riga
Explore the treasures of this Baltic tour gem, boasting distinctive medieval and art nouveau architecture. A local expert leads you on a tour of the well-preserved and lovingly restored Old Town. Here, we’ll view the exterior magnificent Dome Cathedral and the Powder Tower and walk through the maze of old, narrow cobblestone streets. Visit the Riga Central Market, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riga Central Market has invariably remained in the very heart of Riga city, ensuring diverse shopping experience, a personal touch, lively conversation, tall tales and exuberant bargaining with the vendors. In your free afternoon, the Old Town will delight you with colorfully restored merchant’s residences, cozy beer cellars, bustling cafes, shops and galleries.
Day 7: Riga
Join a guided walking tour to discover the impressive Art Nouveau district. Here, view a large number of buildings constructed in the early 20th century and adorned with elaborate decorations. The balance of the day is at leisure to explore at your own pace. You may wish to visit the central market or one of the fascinating museums.
Day 8: Riga/Parnu/Tallinn (Estonia)
As you depart Riga today, proceed across the border to Estonia and journey along the unspoiled Baltic Coast to Parnu, a lovely seaside resort. Arrive in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Day 9: Tallinn (Estonia)
Tallinn is certain to enchant any visitor! Thick ancient walls surround this medieval port town. The winding cobblestone streets are filled with old red-tiled roof houses and distinctive medieval age buildings. Your guided morning tour begins in the Upper Old Town where Tallinn was founded in the 12th century. Here, you may enjoy a breathtaking view of the attractive rooftops. Visit the ornate Russian Orthodox Dome Church before descending to the Lower Old Town where you’ll see the medieval Town Hall and bustling Town Hall Square. The afternoon offers plenty of opportunities to discover on your own. Savor the unique atmosphere and wander the narrow alleys filled with cafes, restaurants and inviting shops and galleries. This evening delight in a sumptuous dinner at a famous local medieval-themed restaurant.

Day 10: Tallinn
Today visit the Estonian Open Air Museum to be able to experience rural Estonia filled with recreated 18th – 20th century villages. This evening join your fellow travelers for a farewell dinner.

Museum of Occupations & Freedom Fights

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights was established in 1992. It is the only such museum in the Baltic States, housed in the former KGB prison, where residents of Lithuania who seemed suspicious to the occupation authorities were imprisoned. There are modern exhibitions telling about the loss of independence in the middle of the 20th century, repressions by Soviet authorities, and the self-sacrificing and persistent fight for independence.

Your flights from New York’s JFK Airport to the Baltics and back are on the following airlines and schedule. We recommend that you check-in 3 ½ hours before departure. Please make sure to allow sufficient time for clearing immigration and customs if you are planning a connecting flight. We recommend at least 3 ½ hours. Please keep in mind that flight schedules are always subject to change.

Actual seat assignment will be provided at the airport. You may call Finnair (877 757 7143) two weeks before the departure and provide them with your AAdvantage number. Please note that smarTours is not involved in either your seat assignment or in the crediting of miles. It is between you and the airlines! Also note, mileage accrual eligibility is subject to change without prior notice.
International flights to/from the U.S. are not included. Land-only travelers are responsible for arranging the entry and exit flights, as well as their arrival and departure transfers. smarTours cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by air schedule changes and delays. Unused land services are non-refundable.
Main Tour: Land-only starts upon independent check in at Vilnius hotel on Day 2 of the itinerary on the tour listed page and ends after breakfast at Tallinn hotel on Day 11 of the itinerary listed on our tour page.
PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION
You must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. Visas are not required for American passport holders. Non U.S. citizens should check with the respective consulates as to the most current visa requirements to all their travel destinations. Please remember that it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary travel documents before the trip.
TICKETS AND FINAL DOCUMENTS
Your airline tickets along with final instruction and some additional travel tips will be sent to you 10 – 7 days before the scheduled departure of your tour.
Immunizations are NOT currently required; however, you may wish to consult your personal physician or local public health authorities as to their suggestions.
You may expect day time temperatures averaging in the 50’s and low 60’s in May and September, 60’s and 70’s in June through August. Nights will be cooler.
NON-INCLUDED MEALS AND SIGHTSEEING
The hotels used on this tour have several dining choices from coffee shop to specialty restaurants. Average cost for dinner (excluding drinks) in the coffee shop is about $20-25 per meal per person. Optional sightseeing tours and evening activities will be offered. Your hotel will accept credit cards for your non-included meals.
CREDIT CARDS AND LOCAL CURRENCY
Hotels and some stores accept major credit cards. However, for “street shopping” you will need local currency or U.S. Dollars. Your hotels will be able to exchange for you cash to local currency. It is recommended that you bring along cash in small denominations.
Each passenger may bring one piece of checked-in luggage (suitcase maximum 44 pounds) and one carry-on piece not to exceed 18”x10”x8”. We recommend that you do not over-pack and that you take a variety of separates with climate and comfort in mind.
