Summary: We stayed one week at the end of September and had the time of our lives. The cabin was perfectly cozy, with a kitchen that had everything needed to prepare most of our meals for the week. The wood-burning stone fireplace is unique and very interesting and is clearly the heart of the home. There was plenty of firewood and starter for it. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom was spotless (as was the whole house), and there were baseboard heaters throughout which made getting out of the shower comfy on cold mornings. John and Kate were very easy to work with and responded quickly to my emails. The property managers stay next door and are super friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. They made our trip extra special with tips about where to find bugling elk and just friendly conversation. Lovely yard and fire pit right on the creek, which we used in the mornings with our coffee and tea. One of our favorite hikes was on the trail that starts near the cabin and goes into the park. There was bison scat and we're pretty sure bear scat too. The cabin's location near Lamar Valley was perfect for us. The towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate are adorable and we will definitely be back. Across the street from the cabin is the general store where we highly, highly advise renting a spotting scope if seeing wildlife at the park is a main activity for you. It made all the difference for us since many animals may only be viewed a mile off the road. Thanks to it we could see coyote, wolves and bear. The owner and staff of the store are personable and we loved dealing with them. Restaurants in town were good. Yelp was helpful in viewing menus to find vegetarian food and overall what to expect. Drive the Beartooth scenic highway if you have time. The weather can vary greatly, so be prepared for anything. Rain gear is important. The first few days of our visit was about 80 degrees farenheit, and the last day had 4" of snow on the ground and high of 30. The park was breathtaking in the snow! Snow plows kept everything drive-able. Know that parts of the park begin closing down in September (like the marina). We flew into Bozeman, MT and rented a car, bear spray, and a cooler from Explore Rentals. They pick you up from the airport and take you to the rental lot a few miles away. Excellent service, and excellent vehicle! We will do this again next time. It's a three hour drive to Silver Gate, and the park is just one mile from the cabin.
