The rolling hills that make up Escondida Hotel and Spa hide a myriad of tales that tell a storied past. Which story is true is up to you.
One version says the hacienda was built by a couple whose last name started with “K” and who met and fell in love after being raised in separate Mexican villages. A mural on the wall of one of the hacienda rooms supposedly supports this story and “K” crests above the doors to that room are still there today. According to the mural, he was a diamond dealer while she was into the arts.
Another story, told by local ranchers who knew the couple and by a former Kerr County Sheriff’s deputy, says Mr. “K” was actually Mr. Gnosticarra, a Greek refuge from the Chicago mob that was hiding out in the Texas Hill Country in the witness protection program after giving evidence against crime boss Sam Gioncanna.
Today, Escondida is a beautiful hideaway on Medina Mountain just 14 miles from the Guadalupe River in Kerrville. The winding path down Highway 16 prepares visitors for an exceptional stay at a unique property. From the moment they pass through the grand gated entrance, one can almost hear a collective sigh from the many who arrive here.
